Guo-Quan Seng's dissertation project "The Creole Chinese Family: Private Property, Family Law, and the Practice of Kinship in Dutch Colonial Java, 1830–1942, "examines how Chinese sojourners and settlers  in British Malaya and the Dutch East Indies negotiated their family life-strategies within the realm of colonial law, and how, in turn, colonial  reformers bargained modernizing reforms in the domain of "Chinese  family/private law" between the 1880s and 1930s. More broadly speaking, his work addresses current debates in the fields of Postcolonial Studies, Modern  China, and International and Transnational History.
